2003
VINTAGE CELLAR SPECIAL:
THE DANIEL SERIES
Importer Aurelio Cabestrero created this series of wines
in honor of the birth of his first child, his son, Daniel.
Each wine is a selection of grapes from Aurelio’s finest
properties representing the Bierzo, Toro, Rioja, and Alicante
regions. Aurelio was involved in every level of the winemaking,
selecting the final blends, even helping with the harvest.
The wines all received 90 or more points from the Robert Parker
Wine Advocate, but aren’t about being ‘score’
wines. These wines are labors of love, built to evolve and
grow over the next decade or two.
This is a very special project to me, as I also had my first
child in 2003 (see picture at right and below). I have been
planning to buy wines from his birth year from all different
regions to cellar, either drinking them in honor of his birth,
drinking them with him when he gets older, or handing over
the most ageworthy ones to him when he turns 21 (hopefully
he’ll share them with his old man, but I won’t
hold him to it). Even if he never enjoys drinking wine, the
wines will be enjoyed by myself and my wife as a reminder
of how time has passed, and the joy that we have received
watching him grow. For other families like ours, the Daniel
Series have even more importance as they were specially created
with that spirit in mind.

The limited cuvee of 2003 Gran Elias Mora Daniel (Toro
region) (a special offering named after the importer’s
son) is a pedal-to-the-metal, balls-to-the-walls effort. Its
inky/purple color is followed by a huge, smoky, graphite,
creme de cassis, and blackberry-scented nose, and a full-bodied,
opulent, layered personality. 92 points $49.99/btl
A limited cuvee of under 150 cases, named after the importer’s
son, the 2003 Luna Beberide Daniel (Bierzo region) is fashioned
from the winery’s finest vineyard parcels (planted at
higher elevations of 2,300 and 3,000 feet). This oak-aged
cuvee is a terrific example of Bierzo. A black/blue/ruby color
is accompanied by a gorgeous nose of violets, blueberries,
raspberries, and cherries. Elegant, with good acidity, fabulous
density, and a broad, cerebral palate impression, this is
a gorgeously structured, well-delineated wine. 91 points $49.99/btl
The custom cuvee produced for the importer (named after his
son), the 2003 Leva Daniel, (Alicante region) is a blend of
30% Tempranillo and nearly equal parts Mourvedre, Syrah, and
Merlot. Deep and layered, with additional concentration as
well as nuances, this seamless effort displays a harmonious
integration of wood, tannin, acidity, and alcohol. 90 points

elegant, well-endowed wine. 91 points $49.99/btl
