Winemakers Notes:
We reserved for this Cuvee certain rows of very old vines in our best Beaune vineyards: Cras, Teurons and Vignes-Franches. These were pruned back to 2 or 3 bunches per vine and then farmed organically. Harvest was by hand, followed by further careful selection on the sorting table.
The grapes were partially destemmed, lightly crushed and then fermented for 20 days in a small wooden vat, with 3 days at higher temperatures of over 30 degress C. Pressing was extremely delicate (around 1 bar only) before ageing 20 months in 500 liter new oak barrels. Cuvee Tante Berthe was bottled unfined and unfiltered on July 5th, 2003 – a propitious day during the waning moon – in order to preserve its brightness, freshness and aromatic potential.

Made from extremely old vines located in Teurons, Vignes Franches and Les Cras, which yielded only 10hl/ha and vinified with 30% of the stems, aged in 500 liter, 100% new oak barrels, of which there were only two, and then it will be aged for 20 to 24 months). This is a massive wine with an incredibly concentrated yet remarkably elegant nose and powerful, robust and firmly structured flavors oozing with sap that completely buffers the big but very ripe tannins. Despite the size, this is astonishingly well balanced and the length just doesn’t quit. I could taste this wine hours later and if you can find any, don’t pass it up as Beune 1ers of this caliber rarely come along. 92-94 points 2010-2020.
