Not weird and funky, not super limited and hard to find, and most importantly not expensive if you happen to fall in love with the style. Field Recordings is one of the best producers in California at finding uncut diamonds across the vineyards of the Central Coast, creating excellent quality and value from overlooked properties. That spirit is absolutely perfect for making skin contact wines like this, as it allows them to work with some of the more obscure and forgotten varieties to build a more cost-effective wine. A full on mélange of at least a dozen varieties from even more vineyard sources, this is all flavor/no funk, clean in character but showing off exactly what 4-6 weeks of sitting on grape skins will do for a white wine. A pale rusty gold color in the glass, the aromas are strong apricot and orange zest with a resinous note in the background, hitting a bit of the citrus aroma from a juicy style IPA with a strong Citra hop usage (for those of you with beer/wine crossover enjoyment). The palate is where this starts taking broad leaps away from resembling a regular white wine, unctuous texture but quite dry with intense citrus and melon rind flavors, finishing with strongly present skin tannins that really plays up the zesty orange fruit flavors through the finish. Very fun, VERY unique for those that may not have delved into the style before but not going to be polarizing or extreme either. Great with heartier vegetable dishes and lots of your more esoteric dishes, the texture makes it very difficult for this wine to be overwhelmed.

INSIDER'S PICK: 2024 BIRICHINO OLD VINE ROSE 'HIC SVNT DRACONES' CALIFORNIA $33.99

https://www.winewarehouseinc.com/insiders-pick/insiders-pick-2024-birichino-old-vine-rose-hic-svnt-dracones-california-3399

https://www.winewarehouseinc.com/insiders-pick/insiders-pick-2024-birichino-old-vine-rose-hic-svnt-dracones-california-3399#comments

Uncategorized

Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, even in the wine world. Many wine fans consider the Rose wines from Bandol in Provence to be among the highest quality from anywhere in the world, and no producer in Bandol is more iconic than Domaine Tempier. After World War II was by far the leading estate in the region thanks to the Peyraud family, and their 'discovery' by a young Kermit Lynch inspired him to write his books and become one of the earliest and most influential importers in the region (so much so that the KL emblem mimics the Tempier label artwork drawn in 1951). These are singular wines from a very unique part of the world, distinctive older vines from ancient vineyards, so to be a Californian winery and say you're using Tempier as your model for your Rose it has to be exceptional. To quote Omar Little from The Wire 'You come at the king, you best not miss'. Let's start with Mourvedre and Cinsault picked specifically to make Rose from two of the oldest parcels of vines in California, Little Big Block from 1895 and Bechthold from 1886 (legitimately the oldest Cinsault vines on the planet). Not to mention their label is a cheeky takedown of Tempier with a Kraken attacking the Tempier ship. Pale in the glass but intensely aromatic with loads of white citrus and rose petal and gaining a juicy watermelon note as it opens up. The palate is awesome with unexpected fleshiness, both juicy and energetic especially with a bit of chill powering up the acidity, finishing with an orange zest citrus tone that stays persistent thanks to the super-fine tannins. Better than many 'elite' Roses from Provence we have had, this is excellent Rose, period. Full stop.

INSIDER'S PICK: 2023 VILLA PAPIANO SANGIOVESE MODIGLIANA 'PAPESSE' (Vinous 91points) $23.99

https://www.winewarehouseinc.com/insiders-pick/insiders-pick-2023-villa-papiano-sangiovese-modigliana-papesse-vinous-91points-2399

https://www.winewarehouseinc.com/insiders-pick/insiders-pick-2023-villa-papiano-sangiovese-modigliana-papesse-vinous-91points-2399#comments

Uncategorized

The Sangiovese grape is undeniably one of Italy's most important, most noble red grape varieties. The heights of success are definitely in Tuscany where it is featured in Chianti and Montalcino, but we often forget how adaptable it is in other parts of the country as it is the most heavily planted red grape in Italy by a fairly wide margin. In Emilia-Romagna (the region around Parma and Bologna) the sparkling wines of Lambrusco are more famous to most of the world, but Sangiovese makes up the lion's share of the everyday red wines on everyone's dinner table. Quality is vastly improved from centuries of mostly bulk production, and more areas are being identified for true excellence like the mountain commune of Modigliana. At one point the most Northern region of Tuscany (until Mussolini redrew the maps), the high altitude and porous soils offer a vastly different character from the more fertile plains and hills below, and in recent years has been pushed by producers like Villa Papiano to be recognized as their own sub-region. Dark in the glass and more floral than a Chianti, this is quickly aromatic with lots of dark wildflowers, black cherry and herbs with some sweeter red fruits coming out over time. The palate is dark and juicy at first, almost a bit modern in comparison to classic Tuscany, but the lingering flavors get dusty and cool with a peppery finish at the end. A real signature to this region is very evident on the finish as well, the bright higher altitude acidity bringing a pop of freshness and almost orange-y citrus over the black fruits. This is so good we had to make sure we featured it in the Tuscan row, Mussolini and his maps be damned!

INSIDER'S PICK: NV (2024) LA LUPINELLA 'IL LUPINELLO' TUSCAN RED $23.99/1L

https://www.winewarehouseinc.com/insiders-pick/insiders-pick-nv-2024-la-lupinella-il-lupinello-tuscan-red-23991l

https://www.winewarehouseinc.com/insiders-pick/insiders-pick-nv-2024-la-lupinella-il-lupinello-tuscan-red-23991l#comments

Uncategorized

We are following the trend from the last few weeks of doing some 'transitional' red wines in the Insider's Pick, wines that do great in this period between Summer and Fall but you will also want to enjoy the rest of the year as well. This one takes us to Tuscany and a truly Old School style of wine that likely predates the Renaissance to the early versions of Chianti, blending the red grapes Sangiovese and Canaiolo with a bit of the white grape Trebbiano. Today this type of wine falls outside the guidelines of Italy's DOC and IGT system and has to be labeled non-vintage (but most houses hide it in the lot #). Today this type of wine would be best described as a house wine found in the cafes and restaurants across Tuscany, offered by the carafe at every table. From Lupinella, however, you have to imagine you stumbled across the best small family restaurant on a forgotten side street, and their 'house wine' is from the family farm that they've tended for generations. Which it pretty much is, pulled from just outside the historic Classico boundaries owned by a family with history as artisan ceramic makers back to the early Renaissance. Using just concrete for fermenting and aging, this is all about freshness and drinkability instead of cellar aging. Mostly transparent and pale dusty red color, the nose is savory and not overpowering with light crunchy red fruits and whiffs of herbs (what would politely be labeled as 'Italian Seasoning' in the spice row of the grocery). The palate has surprisingly nice weight and transfers the flavors very well from the nose with just a fine note of tannins to the finish, light but lingering and definitely capable of working with lots of pasta or antipasto dishes. Maybe not a 'chilled' red (up to you) but definitely works from cellar temps on up.

INSIDER'S PICK: 2025 PRESENT COMPANY 'CARBONIC-ISH' PETIT VERDOT MONTICELLO AVA $25.99

https://www.winewarehouseinc.com/insiders-pick/insiders-pick-2025-present-company-carbonic-ish-petit-verdot-monticello-ava-2599

https://www.winewarehouseinc.com/insiders-pick/insiders-pick-2025-present-company-carbonic-ish-petit-verdot-monticello-ava-2599#comments

Uncategorized

As we swing towards the final third of 2026 we thought it was time to show off a local wine that will really shine during this in-between time of both warm and cool weather (and is still tasty pretty much any time you want it to be honest). Winemaker Chris Tropeano is our kind of person having taken on and enjoying success in all the 'fermentation arts', first starting his career as a brewer with iconic names like Russian River Brewing in Sonoma and Resident Culture in Charlotte. Moving to Virginia he took on winemaking as an assistant at King Family before moving on to the Virginia Wine Collective and starting his own brand. The style of Present Company takes on the non-interventionist style growing more popular among Virginia winemakers and made popular by producers like Lightwell Survey and Vino Dal Bosco/Gabriele Rausse, but also offering a more playful and casual side. The name of the wine is a nod to the partial use of carbonic maceration, a method of getting juice and some color from the grapes without the tannin. For this wine Chris uses a hybrid method that reigns in the tannin but still leaves a healthy amount of the black fruit aromatics and wonderful flavor, perfect for a 'chillable red'. Deep ruby but transparent in the glass, the nose is full of dark cherry skin with hints of anise and forest floor. The palate on the first sip is juicy and almost cola-ish at first then gets darker and more savory as the fine tannins settle in on the finish. Each successive sip feels drier the more the tannins stack up on your tongue, especially when the wine is a bit cooler. Lighter weight but not lacking in flavor at all, this is great to pop casually with friends and with lighter red meats or grilled vegetables.

INSIDER'S PICK: 2024 MADSON WINES PINOT NOIR SANTA CRUZ MOUNTAINS (Vinous 93points) $35.99

https://www.winewarehouseinc.com/insiders-pick/insiders-pick-2024-madson-wines-pinot-noir-santa-cruz-mountains-vinous-93points-3599

https://www.winewarehouseinc.com/insiders-pick/insiders-pick-2024-madson-wines-pinot-noir-santa-cruz-mountains-vinous-93points-3599#comments

Uncategorized

No, this isn't a glitch in the Matrix, you didn't slip into the wine version of 'Groundhog Day'. If you want some background on the winery you can refer back to last week's Insider's Pick and check out our socials as we've been posting about them frequently for months since we first met up. It is impressive how consistently excellent their 'basic' Santa Cruz Mountain blends are, right down to the same accolades from Vinous, and what perfect representations they are of the clean mountain style that is so appealing. This is the antithesis of the sweetened, jammy caricature that 'Californian Pinot Noir' gets portrayed as all too often. Cool dark cherry skins and savory truffle-y herb aromas at first that slowly get deeper and more red-fruited with lots of swirling. The palate is where this really starts to swing out, seemingly lighter at first and distinctly dry even at less than 13%abv, but absolutely STACKED with bright crunchy red fruits and energetic flavors. The weight in the mouth gets fuller over time but never sweetens, indeed leaning more citrusy orange peel and subtle savoriness. Much like the Chardonnay last week, this has loads of life to it and may even be showing better for those that taste on Friday, but getting to it either day will be a treat!

INSIDER'S PICK: 2024 MADSON WINES CHARDONNAY SANTA CRUZ MOUNTAINS (Vinous 93points) $35.99

https://www.winewarehouseinc.com/insiders-pick/insiders-pick-2024-madson-wines-chardonnay-santa-cruz-mountains-vinous-93points-3599

https://www.winewarehouseinc.com/insiders-pick/insiders-pick-2024-madson-wines-chardonnay-santa-cruz-mountains-vinous-93points-3599#comments

Uncategorized

This is a more expensive wine than we usually feature in the Insider's Pick, but we are SO JAZZED to have this producer in the store we had to share (plus after suffering through the heat of July we all deserve a little reward). This was a find for us in our recent Californian travels, and the more we got to know Cole Thomas and the Madson team the more we fell in love, knowing we HAD to get their wines into the store somehow. Fortunately they were already beginning the process of finding distribution out our way, so we didn't have to do much convincing our wait very long. All we had to do was pounce when the wines arrived (and carve out a cherry or two for ourselves). Madson has become one of the best examples of how profoundly under-rated the Santa Cruz Mountains growing area is as a whole, making world class wines from spectacular pockets of vineyards scattered among the trees and fog, and can still be called relative bargains for what they provide. This Chardonnay is a perfect picture of what they are about as a winery (as is the Santa Cruz Mountain Pinot Noir for you red fans) for their 'minimal interference' winemaking mantra; spontaneous native yeast fermentation, minimal new oak presence, and embracing the cooler mountain characters of their vineyards. Vibrant lemon and citrus aromas with a small hint of warm white fruits and some lemon curd as it opens up. The palate also has a bit of that Californian warmth at first but quickly moves to a cut of coastal salinity and bright green apple, with an impressive natural juiciness that doesn't need any outside boost. This has lots of Burgundian character ties, one of which is that it is built to evolve and grow with time, so those of you coming by on Friday will have the chance to see this really kicking on all cylinders.... if there's any left, that is.

INSIDER'S PICK: 2023 CHAMPIONSHIP BOTTLE 'YOU + ME + THE MOON' WHITE WILLAMETTE VALLEY $28.99

https://www.winewarehouseinc.com/insiders-pick/insiders-pick-2023-championship-bottle-you-me-the-moon-white-willamette-valley-2899

https://www.winewarehouseinc.com/insiders-pick/insiders-pick-2023-championship-bottle-you-me-the-moon-white-willamette-valley-2899#comments

Uncategorized

Nice to finally choose a wine for the Insider's Pick without concern for the extreme heat outside or the worry that everything will taste like it has smoke taint. Founder/ winemaker/ salesman Saul Mutchnick grew up Virginian and earned his way into the wine industry though the Richmond and Williamsburg scenes before taking on Oregon, interning with some great small producers and slowly developing his own label. Largely shaped by the more minimalist styles of winemaking and the more textured white wines from Friuli, the Championship Wines are primarily from the cooler climates of Oregon (even their occasional reds), embracing vibrancy and acidity over fame and reputation of address. While not an 'orange wine', we can call it 'orange-adjacent' as it definitely has influences from that winemaking style without showing the color changes. This starts as a co-fermentation of Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc, then spends a full year aging on the lees before being bottled without filtration or extra SO2. Clean and clear in the glass (ordinary-looking?) but wholly unique from the first whiff, filled with zesty citrus and lychee, lots of layers that come out with each swirl. The palate is equally outstanding, deep and naturally juicy with zero oak or sweetness present, textured citrus skin and fine leesy tannins with vibrancy for days that leaves a long citrusy finish. Natural wine-influenced but not one that is overtaken by the natural-ness, this is a rockstar food wine with Mediterranean cuisine.

INSIDER'S PICK: 2025 SENTIDINO ALBARINO RIAS BAIXAS $17.99

https://www.winewarehouseinc.com/insiders-pick/insiders-pick-2025-sentidino-albarino-rias-baixas-1799

https://www.winewarehouseinc.com/insiders-pick/insiders-pick-2025-sentidino-albarino-rias-baixas-1799#comments

Uncategorized

Another hot one this week. Albarino from the Rias Baixas region of Spain has grown immensely in popularity over the last couple decades, so much so that the grape is one of the fastest growing internationally with new plantings worldwide trying to capture the enjoyment. It has made it more difficult to find good values however, at least ones that keep that classic coastal vibrance and character. We're happy to say this one may well over-deliver for the price. Quiet floral aromas with more pear and lime leaf and a pop of coastal salinity (especially right out of the fridge). Impressive juicy leesy body with tons of clean clear white fruits and just a tinge of minerality and skin tannin to provide a little energy on the finish. So cool and quenching when chilled, juicy and flavorful as it gets to room temperature. But some of the more unexpected ones may need a bit of explaining; this wine has been here less than a week, and has been confused for a sake multiple times because of the label. This Spanish wine originated from a relationship between the winery and a restaurant in Japan looking to create a wine that would better marry with the extremely complex and often contrasting elements of their cuisine. A lot of traditional white Rioja is more aged on release and can show more oxidative qualities, but for this wine they are looking for more aromatic intensity first and foremost (the name 'Kaori' refers to scent and aromatics). Built from 100% old vine Viura and aged in mostly multi-use barrels, this does not disappoint on the promise of the name with lots of rich baked apple and musky melon, with some toasted vanilla from the oak at first that dissipates as the fruit opens up. The palate is creamy and rich with leesy fruit textures that deliver lots of complexity across the palate, but also pops in some natural skin tannin with the oak tones on the finish. Often the go-to for the more difficult food pairings with exotic spice palates will end up being whites with some sweetness to them, but this will do equally well with a much drier presentation. Bring on the most complex, spiced or umami-driven seafood and sauces you can find.
