Though we knew they were coming, StudioBrew didn't quite land in time for us to get them ready for tasting last week, so we had to get them their own feature slot today. We will be pouring from StudioBrew their Das Pilsner, 'Mosaic Sunset' Imperial IPA w/Agave, 'The Ferguson' Oatmeal Chocolate Milk Stout, and 'Dancing Monk' Belgian Ale, as well a the Basic City 'Opera' Galaxy & Mosaic DIPA and the Smartmouth 'Arriba Grande' Mexican Spiced Coffee Stout. Come on by and give them a try!
Our final tasting to celebrate Cider Week VA is local favorite Potters Craft. Over the last few years the potters crew have built a reputation for creativity in their recipes, drawing a lot of inspiration from the craft beer world, yet still maintaining a strong connection to traditional cidermaking values. The ciders being tasted today showcase all those qualities. We will be opening the Ryesap (Basque influenced, aged in whiskey barrels), Double Simcoe (made with Simcoe hops), Cider Nouveau (aged with Merlot and Petit Verdot skins from King Family Vineyards), and Pelure de Pomme (fermented on the skins along with extended maceration post fermentation). Come on by and enjoy the great diversity cider can provide!
Today's tasting celebrating Cider Week VA shows off the two producers we stock from over in the Shenandoah Valley. From fruit along the many bends of the Shenandoah River (tasting room in Bluemont) we have the 'Rocket' Off-Dry and Windrush Oak and Chestnut Stave Aged ciders from Wild Hare, and from the Showalter Orchard in Timberville we have the Heritage and fruit-added Virginia Strawberry ciders from Old Hill. Hope to see you here!
Today's store tasting celebrating Cider Week VA features a selection from the 'sweetened' side of the cider scene. Not necessarily sweeter tasting (though some are for sure) but made by adding water and sugar back in, along with other flavors often going in as well. These ciders tend to be less expensive and more consistent to make, which makes them extremely popular with the pub and festival crowd, while still showing some local character. On deck for tasting will be the Blue Toad Granny Smith and Harvest Fest ciders, and from Cobbler Mountain the Original Honey and Wild Blackberry Hop ciders. Come on by and give them a try!
Our second day celebrating Cider Week VA, today we feature local favorite Castle Hill Cider, located out Rt 231 towards lovely Gordonsville. Up for tasting will be the Terrestrial (Dry; not pictured, arriving soon from our friends at Central Virginia Distributing) Serendipity (Off-dry), and Big Pippin (infused with ginger and slightly fortified). Come on by and give them a try!
Starting off our Cider Week Va celebration with three bottlings from the 'urban' cider house of Blue Bee. We will be offering their off-dry Aragon 1904, the very dry Charred Ordinary, and their barrel aged Rocky Ridge Reserve. Hope to see you here!
Our first shot of cider from Graft Ciders in New York came a few weeks back, and we just received our second shot with some more diverse styles. Like our local friends at Potter's Craft Cider, Graft bridges the gap between dry traditional European ciders and the American craft beer worlds with creativity and by embracing the funkier side of cider making. Available for tasting will be their core production 'Farm Flor' (unflavored and naturally funky), along with the latest release from their Hop Series ( 'Hop Tropic', uses Victoria Secret and Ella hops with grapefruit and lemon zest) and their Gose Series ('Desert Diamonds'; spiced with tamarind, ginger, turmeric and sea salt). Each of these series rotates through 6 different brews, and we anticipate seeing many of the other releases arrive here in the future, along with ciders in their Book of Nomad and Cloud City series.
In 2011, Hardywood Park was an risky oddball brewery launched in a dicey warehouse district in Richmond near The Diamond baseball field. The last six years has seen the brewery evolve as a cornerstone of the tremendous growth of the beer culture across the state, not only by their multiple expansions and increased productions, but by the evolution of that part of the city into a hip modern beer scene known across the country. We all know the names of their most sought after beers and their many legendary stouts, but the scope of their quality and expertise genuinely extends across the full spectrum. The experimental releases here in town at the pilot brewery and taphouse shows how they continue to play around and push the boundaries even as they are about to launch a huge multi-million dollar production facility. They are truly one of the great Virginia beer success stories, and one of the reasons events like the Virginia Craft Beer Festival are so exciting as we all look for our next big favorite.
For the tasting today, we will be featuring the newly released 'Cuvee Gold' (formerly Vinalia Urbana, renamed because too many people read it as 'Vanilla') and the Virginia Blackberry, as well as their three core 6pack beers of VIPA, Pilsner, and Singel. We are also launching a special everyday discounted price for these three beers of $9.29/6pack which will last through the end of the year. Come on by and give them as try!
Friends from Reason Beer will be here through 5pm at least (depending on evening commitments) but we will be pouring samples through the close of the store, and their Blonde will be available to purchase throughout (6% discount for 2+ bottle purchases available through Monday July 31 while supplies last). On deck for today along with the Reason Blonde will be a wide spectrum of diverse but easy drinking beers to enjoy over the weekend: Great Lakes Brewing Company 'Rally Drum' Red Ale, O'Connor Brewing Co. 'R&R' Lager, Off Color Brewing 'Tooth & Claw' Dry Hopped Pilsner, and Against The Grain Brewery 'Kamen Knuddelin' Dark Sour. Come on by and give them a try!
A decent amount of new arrivals made their way in to the store in and around the usually quiet 4th of July week, when most people are hitting the big vacation spots. Commonwealth Brewing Co.'s arrival last week from Virginia Beach was the big news, and while the Big Papi DIPA was the overwhelming highlight of their first drop (out of stock now, unfortunately) their entire portfolio is exciting and deserves attention. Available for tasting today will be the Mano Del Puma, Ojo Del Tigre, and Trouvaille from Commonwealth, along with the Orange & Lime Margarita Gose and Pink Lemonade Sour from Old Bust Head, and the just-arrived 'Farmer's Tan' Hoppy Saison from Smartmouth. Hope to see you here!
